For many years, military planners expected one of the most well-known close air support aircraft to retire before the end of this decade. However, recent combat operations and ongoing security needs have changed those plans. The world’s largest air force has now decided to keep this aircraft in service until at least 2030.
The decision shows that older aircraft can still play an important role on the modern battlefield, especially when they perform tasks that newer aircraft cannot easily replace.
Why the Retirement Was Delayed
The air force had planned to slowly remove this aircraft from service as part of a long-term modernization plan. Military leaders believed newer aircraft would take over its missions in the future.
However, continued military operations in the Middle East have shown that the aircraft still provides strong support for ground forces. Its ability to fly low, stay in the air for a long time, and strike targets with high accuracy makes it valuable in certain combat situations.
Because of this, defense leaders decided to extend the aircraft’s service life while the military continues to develop and build newer aircraft.
Officials also explained that keeping the aircraft active helps avoid gaps in combat capability while the defense industry increases production of newer models.
Current Fleet Status
As of the 2026 budget year, the air force still operates more than 160 of these aircraft. The fleet has already been reduced over the past few years, with about one quarter of the aircraft removed from service since 2024.
Lawmakers have also supported keeping part of the fleet active. They required that at least 103 aircraft remain operational during the current budget year to maintain support for ongoing missions.
This political support played a key role in delaying the aircraft’s retirement.
Continued Role in Middle East Operations
The aircraft continues to take part in many missions across the Middle East. These operations include strikes against armed groups and patrol missions in sensitive sea routes.
Its role often involves supporting troops on the ground, protecting rescue teams, and attacking enemy vehicles or equipment.
In one recent mission, the aircraft helped protect a rescue operation for pilots whose fighter jet had been shot down. The close air support aircraft remained overhead to provide protection while recovery teams secured the area.
Although one aircraft was damaged during the operation, the pilot was able to safely reach friendly airspace before ejecting.
The military has also increased the number of these aircraft deployed to the region, which shows that commanders still rely on its abilities.
Since 2023, the aircraft has remained almost constantly deployed to support operations against militant groups in the region.
Unique Strengths of the Aircraft
Even though the aircraft first entered service many years ago, it still offers several advantages.
It was built specifically for close air support missions. The aircraft has strong armor, a powerful main cannon, and the ability to carry many types of weapons.
Its large cannon can fire thousands of rounds each minute, allowing it to destroy armored vehicles and other ground targets with high accuracy.
The aircraft can also carry guided bombs and missiles, giving pilots different options depending on the mission.
These features make the aircraft highly effective when supporting troops fighting on the ground.
Future Air Force Plans
Although the aircraft will remain in service for several more years, the air force is still moving forward with modernization plans.
Newer fighter aircraft are expected to take over many close air support missions in the future. The military also plans to expand its fleet with new fighters, advanced bombers, and next-generation aircraft designed for modern warfare.
These aircraft are built to survive in heavily defended airspace and can perform several different roles during combat operations.
Even with these new systems under development, military leaders say the close air support aircraft will remain important until a full replacement is ready.
Looking Ahead
The decision to extend the aircraft’s service life highlights a key reality in military planning: proven equipment can remain valuable even as new technology appears.
While the air force continues to invest in modern aircraft, this long-serving platform will continue supporting troops and carrying out combat missions for the rest of this decade.
For now, it remains one of the most trusted aircraft for protecting forces on the ground and responding quickly in dangerous situations.
