Glasgow in short
Glasgow is one of Scotland’s two principal airports, alongside Edinburgh. easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair and TUI provide the European network, Loganair connects the Highlands and Islands, and Emirates has served Dubai from Glasgow for years. The Hebridean and island flights give the radar here a character no English airport has: small turboprops fanning out west and north.
History
Glasgow Airport opened in 1966 at Abbotsinch, taking over from the old Renfrew Airport next door. It grew into Scotland’s long-haul gateway and remains the main base for Loganair, Scotland’s own airline.
Watching Glasgow on the radar
Zoom out slightly and you get one of the best radar views in Britain: transatlantic traffic streaming overhead on the North Atlantic tracks, Glasgow and Edinburgh flows crossing, and island-hoppers heading for Islay, Barra and Stornoway. On the approach, aircraft sweep in over the Clyde.
