After the war it did not become a commercial passenger airport until the 1960s, where it became a major centre for scheduled passenger flights. Before this London Stansted had been used for cargo flights, a role which it still continues to this day. As London’s other two airports, Heathrow and Gatwick had become overly busy, Stansted became London’s third airport, allowing the capital to take up to 25 million extra passengers.
