United Airlines Launches Apprenticeship Program For Mechanics And Technicians

United Airlines has announced the launch of a new apprenticeship program aimed at training and developing the next generation of aircraft mechanics and technicians. The program, which is being offered in partnership with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), will provide participants with on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and hands-on experience.

Addressing the Skills Gap

The new program comes in response to a growing skills gap in the aviation industry. As experienced mechanics and technicians retire, there is a shortage of skilled workers to take their place. United Airlines is taking proactive steps to address this issue by investing in the training and development of its workforce.

Program Details

The apprenticeship program will be open to candidates who have a high school diploma or equivalent and have completed a certified aviation maintenance technician school program. Participants will be hired as full-time employees of United Airlines and will receive competitive pay and benefits.

The program will last for three years and will consist of a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Participants will work alongside experienced mechanics and technicians, gaining practical experience in repairing and maintaining aircraft.

Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification. This certification is required to work as an aircraft mechanic in the United States and is recognized globally.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

United Airlines has also committed to ensuring that the apprenticeship program is inclusive and accessible to a diverse range of candidates. The company has pledged to recruit and train candidates from underrepresented groups, including women and people of color.

In a statement, United Airlines’ Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Kate Gebo, said, “We believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to our success. By investing in the training and development of our workforce, we are not only addressing the skills gap in the aviation industry but also creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds to build meaningful careers.”

Looking Ahead

United Airlines’ apprenticeship program is a welcome initiative in the aviation industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. The program provides a much-needed opportunity for aspiring mechanics and technicians to gain valuable experience and skills in a supportive environment. With its commitment to diversity and inclusion, the program also provides a pathway for underrepresented groups to enter the aviation industry and build fulfilling careers.

As United Airlines looks ahead to the future, it is clear that the success of the company will depend on its ability to recruit, train, and retain a skilled and diverse workforce. The apprenticeship program is just one of the ways in which the company is investing in its people and building a sustainable future for the aviation industry.
