London Luton Airport was opened in 1938, and was built in a unique position, with its runway on top of a large hill. It was used as a base for RAF planes during the second world war. After the war, it was opened to commercial airlines, and became a base for chartered airlines in the 1960s and 70s. In the 1990s, Luton Airport underwent large development programmes, and was renamed to London Luton Airport to emphasise its close connections with the capital.
