Manchester is the busiest UK airport outside London, located about eight miles south of the city centre, and the only UK airport apart from Heathrow with two full-length parallel runways. History
Manchester Airport opened in 1938 as Ringway Airport; its first scheduled service was a KLM flight to Amsterdam that same year. During the Second World War it trained parachutists. The second runway opened in 2001, and the airport’s Runway Visitor Park remains one of the best official spotting locations in the country.
