Liverpool Airport was founded in the grounds of the historic Tudor mansion, Speke Hall, in 1933, and was for a time called Speke Airport. After commercial aviation resumed in the UK following the Second World War, Liverpool Airport started a series of annual air shows, which were extremely popular for the years that they ran. Between the ten years of 1997 and 2007 Liverpool underwent its period of greatest growth, wherein it became one of the largest airports in the UK. In 2001 the airport was renamed after one of the city’s most famous sons, John Lennon of The Beatles. The Airport was also redecorated to reference several Beatles songs.
